One of the first new devices of this type to be introduced in nearly a decade, the Ohio Medical integrated flowmeter enhances patient safety in several ways. Since every hospital patient room is equipped with outlets for providing medical air or oxygen, and traditional flowmeters are stand alone products, Ohio Medical recognized the advantages of combining the two into one unit. This effectively puts an end to the ‘room-to-room’ procedure, and ensures a flowmeter is always readily available when a patient needs one. Also, by making nurses’ jobs less ‘search-and-locate’ oriented and more productive, it reduces flowmeter damage and/or loss, saving money. In fact, by creating a medical gas outlet with a built-in flowmeter, many dollars can be saved every year just from not moving them around.
But the financial savings don’t end there. This revolutionary new integrated design also eliminates expensive repair and replacement of medical gas outlets resulting from normal wear and tear, through repeated engaging and disengaging of flowmeters. The O-ring seals on the average outlet can break down or deteriorate due to friction. Eventually, this leads to cracks in the seals, compromising performance and patient safety. The Ohio Medical integrated flowmeter never experiences this problem, or the costs it incurs. And its initial cost is comparable to having to purchase separate outlets and flowmeters.
Another benefit to this innovative new flowmeter is that it can be installed as part of a new construction project or easily retrofitted to any existing medical gas outlet. “Most retrofit applications are ‘Plug & Play’,” explains D’Agostino. “All that’s involved is removing the existing finish assembly and installing the new integrated flowmeter.
