Scales Industrial Technologies was literally on the drawing board when called upon to design and implement a custom air compressor system, and provide the equipment for a recently completed new hangar at Newark Liberty airport, home to a major US airline.
Systems Engineer Steven Lichtenstein explains how the project engineers made the choice early on to incorporate a compressed air system into the hangar design itself for planned efficiency and reliability that also contributed substantial energy-savings.
Compressed air is used to power the tools needed to repair aircraft and as such plays an important role in the overarching design of the new hangar. Scales put together the compressor, air treatment system and storage receiver for the air system.
Lichtenstein: “We suggested two energy saving air compressors using variable frequency drive capacity controls. The compressors are designed to match the operation’s exact compressed air demand while maintaining energy efficiency.
“Each machine includes a communication module allowing for lead – lag control and automatic back-up. This means that if one compressor becomes disabled, the other one comes on line instantly with no loss of compressed air to the system. We designed the system this way to be totally robust,” he explains.
In addition, the lead compressor can be automatically rotated on a time basis. This insures that operating hours are evenly divided between the two packages.
Scales has performed such design and engineering numerous times for customers who know where to look first when they need a complete solution.
“The customer was so pleased with the performance of the completed system, they asked us to come back to work with them on another compressed air system in another hanger,” concludes Lichtenstein.
For over 45 years, Scales remains the acknowledged leader in the design, installation, sale, and service of complete industrial compressed air solutions and advanced industrial technologies that work to reduce energy costs while increasing productivity, reliability and profitability.
