Superior Printing and Ink is a longtime customer of Scales Industrial Technologies. They have supplied Superior with the compressors they need to keep their business thriving.
Recently, Superior, a manufacturer of commercial printing ink since 1918, began a search for a new chiller to add into their production process. Their current rooftop cooling tower was lacking the ability to cool water below ambient temperatures. This led to a lack of efficiency in the production process, causing machines to be dialed back below their true potential.
Printing ink can be extremely sensitive to heat, with certain colors reacting differently to varying temperatures. Yellow, for example, is one of the most sensitive. It can experience premature polymerization (hardening) if temperatures in the grinding chamber are not controlled.
Harriet Derway, of Scales’ Connecticut division, developed a plan to bring down the water temperatures of Superior’s cooling system and the result was nothing short of outstanding. Upon Derway’s recommendation, a 32.9-ton MTA TAEvo chiller was selected for the job. The chiller, as well as everything associated with a clean installation, was sourced and installed by Scales experts to ensure flawless fit and performance.
The result: Prior to the installation of the new chiller, cooling water was flowing into machines at 71º. With the addition of the 32.9-ton MTA TAEvo temperatures were averaging 45º. That’s a 37% drop in the temperature of Superior Ink’s cooling system!
These temperature drops were just the beginning. Along with the added piece of mind, came the ability to run the machines at much greater rates, resulting in a more efficient operation overall. With efficiency gains ranging from 33%(Cyan) to 44%(Black), production has reached levels higher than ever before.
These increases in efficiency have effectively lowered the production costs. This has allowed the company to price their products more competitively as well as free up resources within the operation.
Thanks to Harriet Derway and the Scales team, Superior Ink will be able to keep their manufacturing process cooler than ever before while saving money! This success story is just another example of Scales’ ability to design and implement a plan to improve processes of businesses of all types.
