Coming up with a custom design solution drawing from a wide array of industrial technologies is a bit like solving a puzzle. Manufacturing companies often need system design expertise and integration beyond the simple “quote and sell” approach to solve their unique puzzle.

Concepcion relates a recent case wherein a manufacturer needed a chilled water system that didn’t rely on a series of individual chillers, but instead, one large chiller to accommodate their production needs.
Scales brought in its highly trained engineers to design a solution. Heat load and water flow of the customer’s equipment had to be calculated to provide an exact assessment of the chiller size requirements – the key to solving the puzzle.
Heat load was directly calculated using required temperature drop and amount of material being processed; heat loss through piping was also considered.
Due to placement restrictions, the chiller needed to be on the floor, and a plate-frame heat exchanger configuration was needed. The chiller was selected based on total heat load and water flow from each of the customer’s machines.
Controls for the entire system such as overflow prevention for the heat exchange tank, and regulating the speed of the pump motors were also designed.
Based on the analysis performed by Scales engineers, the equipment was selected. The new system employed a high-efficiency chiller using a glycol cooling agent served by water pumps within its own loop. This worked in conjunction with a heat exchanger and mixing tank to transfer heat. More specifically, the chiller cools the glycol and the glycol cools the water circulated, processed and recycled throughout the customer’s machines.
